Don’s Story: Detox and Long-Term Recovery

Detoxing, through the Eyes of a Person in Long-Term Recovery

My name is Don Hebert and I’m the Director of Business Development at Coleman Addiction Medicine. I’m also a person in long-term recovery from Substance Use Disorder. For me, that means I have not taken a drink of alcohol or ingested drugs to get high since October 10, 1989. A lot has changed since then. Technology, social norms, substances and even pathways of recovery are different than when I was young.

While medical detox existed when I got sober, it was not as well-known to the average, every day, walking-around-person like myself. Instead, I went through a horrendous withdrawal process–on my own–in a 12 Step meeting. Looking back, I can say I’m lucky to be alive, surviving seizures, panic attacks, and a lot of anxiety and depression.

Getting Honest With Yourself

Today at Coleman Addiction Medicine I get to witness people begin their journey back to wellness with medical support from experienced addiction professionals. There is a part of me in every patient who walks through our door. I can instantly identify with the fear and defeat in their eyes. The gift of desperation makes it possible for us to rise up and become the best version of ourselves if we are willing to accept, change, and get honest

At Coleman Addiction Medicine, we combine the actual withdrawal management (aka detox) process with 6 months of Naltrexone therapy and case management to help our patients and their support network begin building a foundation of recovery that’s safe, effective, and personalized. We refer to it as the (20, 98, 1 rule.)

The 20, 98, 1  Rule of Detox and Recovery

For more than 20 years Dr. Coleman and his team have been helping people detox off alcohol and opioids (including Suboxone and Methadone) in a comfortable and highly effective manner.  Over 7,500 people nationwide have detoxed using the innovative, outpatient Coleman Method.

Historically, 98 percent of opioid patients have completed their detox using the Coleman Method. Our patients receive a warm hand-off to other next levels of care. We stay with them and offer support during their early stages of recovery to ensure they know they are never alone.

But the most important number is 1. That number can represent you or your loved one. If you are our patient we will make you feel like the most important person in the room, because you are. At Coleman Addiction Medicine we are revolutionizing the detox experience, one person, at a time.

Medication-Assisted Treatment and The Coleman Method

Over the years I’ve seen many different treatment methods. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) has come a long way since the days of Methadone Maintenance. There are a lot of choices out there, which is both a positive and sometimes a challenge to find the right fit for an individual. What I like about The Coleman Method is that we are not substituting one opioid for another, potentially less harmful, opioid.

Naltrexone is a great alternative for someone looking to stop using opioids or alcohol. It is a non-addictive opioid blocker that reduces cravings for opioids and alcohol and will block the high from opiates. Our long-acting naltrexone implant option has helped many people build a foundation for healthy living. It’s been a real game-changer for people that have struggled with other treatments or medications.

Ongoing Support and Care During Recovery and Beyond

Medication alone will only bring you so far. That’s why we also offer Case Management. Ongoing support and making a warm hand-off to a patient’s next level of care help bring life-changing results to many of the people who walk in and out of our doorways.

So to conclude, I’d like to leave you with the “IS, DOES, and MEANS” of Coleman Addiction Medicine.

Coleman DOES this by combining its unique accelerated detox methodology with Naltrexone therapy and case management in a highly personalized way, which engages your support system from Day 1.
